Rewarding Low Altitude Data Near Major Airports: A New Incentive for the Wingbits Community
Wingbits
December 23, ‘25

In our continuous effort to enhance the Wingbits project and incentivize participation, we are introducing a new bonus rewards program targeted at contributors who provide ADS-B data at low altitudes. This critical data captures low-flying aircraft (below 6,000 feet) near major airport locations.
This initiative recognizes the critical role of low altitude data in ensuring comprehensive air traffic monitoring and safety.
Why is low altitude data so important?
Low altitude data is essential for managing aircraft operations in the terminal airspace around airports. It provides critical insights for air traffic controllers and enhances situational awareness, especially during approaches and departures.

Moreover, it provides crucial insights on actual departure and landing times. By incentivizing the collection of this specific data, we aim to:
- Improve data accuracy and reliability in key airspace zones
- Encourage wider participation from community members located near airports
- Strengthen the Wingbits project’s overall data coverage
Bonus rewards structure
Participants who provide low altitude ADS-B data within a designated radius of major airports will be eligible for bonus rewards.
The reward structure will be based on the following criteria:
Proximity to airport: Data should originate from an area defined by a cylinder of 7 hexagons centered on the airport; 1 central and 6 peripheral H3 resolution-6 hexagons.

Low Altitude: To qualify for bonus rewards, data points must be located at an altitude below 6000 feet, such as planes taxiing, taking off, landing or circling near an airport.
Airport Selection: Initially, the Low Altitude Bonus Rewards program will focus on approximately 500 major airports worldwide, out of the tens of thousands of airports available.
Reward Amount: Each low altitude hexagon generates 24 bonus tokens daily. The total tokens from all covered hexagons form a daily low altitude reward pool. This pool of rewards is then distributed among the stations that contributed at least 100 data points per low altitude hexagon.
Reward Logic: Similarly to the base reward logic, Low Altitude Rewards will be proportional to the low altitude PageRank score of the station for that day.
Benefits for the community
This bonus rewards program offers numerous benefits to the Wingbits community:
- Increased data accuracy and completeness
- Greater incentives for participation
- Enhanced visibility and recognition for dedicated contributors.
Our preliminary analysis shows that we are already covering almost 60% of the major airports worldwide.
We believe this new initiative will significantly strengthen the Wingbits project and provide valuable insights into low altitude air traffic patterns.

Company
Wingbits is a DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network) that rewards community members with $WINGS tokens for monitoring aircraft in real-time using specialized ADS-B hardware. The network aligns incentives to compensate participants based on the quality and quantity of flight tracking data they contribute, creating a more equitable alternative to traditional tracking systems. By incentivizing strategic hardware placement and reliable uptime, Wingbits is building the world's largest and most secure flight tracking network while disrupting an industry that has relied on unpaid volunteers for decades.
