Reliable connectivity has always been a missing link for decentralized networks.
Today, we're introducing a strategic collaboration between Wingbits and Roam to bridge that gap, bringing together flight tracking intelligence and global wireless connectivity to solve one of DePIN's challenges: reliable internet access for decentralized hardware.
Roam is building the Open Wireless Network powered by OpenRoaming and eSIM technology. Their seamless, secure WiFi enables users to connect anywhere while earning rewards, creating the foundation for truly global, borderless internet connectivity.
Wingbits is building the world's largest virtual map of the sky. Our global community of everyday individuals earn rewards for monitoring aircraft in real-time using specialized hardware. With proprietary, high-precision, and industry-first encrypted hardware, Wingbits delivers the most reliable flight tracking network.
This partnership combines real-time flight intelligence with universal wireless connectivity, enabling reliable data transmission from any location, simplified deployment of flight tracking hardware worldwide, and seamless network switching for optimal data delivery.
The Connectivity Challenge for Decentralized Hardware
DePIN networks face a fundamental infrastructure problem: hardware deployed in remote locations, rooftops, rural areas, and mobile installations often struggle with unreliable internet connectivity. This creates data gaps, reduces network reliability, and limits where hardware can be effectively deployed.
For flight tracking networks, this connectivity challenge is particularly acute. The most valuable monitoring locations - near airports, along flight corridors, in remote areas with unique traffic patterns - are often exactly where traditional internet infrastructure is weakest or most expensive.
Current solutions force DePIN operators to choose between optimal placement for data collection and reliable internet access, limiting network coverage and reducing the quality of collected data.
Our Proof of Concept
Earlier this month, Wingbits and Roam completed their collaborative proof of concept, flashing physical SIM cards with Roam’s eSIM technology that was then inserted into Wingbits devices as an alternative to the typical ethernet. Paired with a compatible 4G LTE module, this allows the flight tracking hardware to connect through Roam's global wireless network, ensuring consistent data transmission regardless of location.
The integration enables:
Global connectivity for Wingbits hardware - devices can connect anywhere Roam's network reaches
Automatic network switching - devices find the best available connection without manual configuration
Simplified deployment - place hardware in optimal locations without dependence on Ethernet cables
Enhanced data reliability - consistent connectivity means fewer gaps in flight tracking coverage
Early User Experience with Roam
From the first batch of test devices, the integration has been seamless.
According to Wingbits’ hardware team who tested the devices over a period of one month, the Roam eSIM integration worked out-of-the-box and performed exactly as expected. Devices were able to switch between networks, maintain stable connectivity in challenging environments, and continue streaming data without interruption. This is exactly the type of plug-and-play reliability we can use for global deployments.
For operators, this means deployments feel simpler, faster, and more flexible. Instead of worrying about local carrier signup or fixed-line setups, devices can just be installed where they’re needed most - and the network takes care of the rest.
Empowering DePIN Infrastructure
This partnership demonstrates how wireless connectivity could further unlock DePIN potential. Roam's technology doesn't just help solve Wingbits' more challenging connectivity needs - it provides a blueprint for how decentralized networks could achieve truly global coverage.
By removing connectivity barriers, we're trying to enable:
Strategic hardware placement in previously hard-to-access locations
Mobile and temporary installations for events or research
Backup connectivity solutions for critical monitoring points
What's Next
Building on our successful proof of concept, we plan to roll out:
More Roam integration across select devices in the Wingbits network
Shared infrastructure solutions for other DePIN networks
Global coverage expansion in underserved regions
The future of decentralized infrastructure is globally connected infrastructure.
